This series of projects by Content Studio for Ashwood High School transforms a former trade school into one of Melbourne’s best-performing high schools.

FULFILLING THE POTENTIAL OF THE MASTERPLAN
Renovating a heritage-listed property in Victoria involves navigating a complex set of regulations from the local council and Heritage Victoria.
These buildings often feature intricate façades, period details, and structural constraints that must remain intact. Renovations need to balance heritage preservation with uses not conceived of when the building was built.
The process can take time, so assembling a team of professionals who understand heritage compliance is important. Content Studio worked closely with Heritage Victoria, our heritage consultant Michael Taylor, and the builder plan group to steer a path through the regulatory requirements, ensuring all modifications respected the building’s historical significance while meeting the program and budget.
A WETLANDS ASPECT
Originally built in the boom-time style, the building had been renovated over time for use as a residence, a boarding house, and an art gallery and residence, before its latest incarnation.
The brief required the integration of a state-of-the-art laboratory and medical facility within the heritage framework. This demanded innovative solutions to ensure the building met the complex servicing needs of an IVF clinic, including strict calibration requirements for the laboratory.
TECH & SCIENCE FOCUS
Content Studio worked with Megan Hounslow to create relaxed and positive interior spaces, the warm neutrals of wellness retreats inspired the scheme for the foyer, the waiting areas and the private consultation rooms.
We achieved the recalibration of the building's interior without compromising its historical integrity. The final design delivers a space that seamlessly integrates modern medical requirements within the elegance of a Victorian terrace.

A NEW ADDRESS
When the access road is complete, it will cross the old course of Damper Creek and skirt the Ashwood wetlands to High Street, creating a new address for the school. The entry has been designed to allow safe access by all forms of transport; it includes a bike path, equitable pedestrian access from the street, and a bus stop for PTV routes.
